Freewheeling Trike Seats Take Off At 75th Anniversary

MMP15_Sturgis_Freewheeler_3Best rally ever? All indications are that the 75 Anniversary of the Sturgis Rally was a success. The record crowds were no shock, however the interest in Mustang’s latest seat for Harley-Davidson’s FLRT Freewheeler™ three-wheeler was a pleasant surprise. “We just wanted to show off the new Freewheeler seat, but had not anticipated the amount of interest it was going to generate,” admits Mustang Seats’ Rallymeister John Glynn. He attributes a more mature demographic, the fact that the riders are staying in the saddle longer than ever before and the sheer number of people at Sturgis to Mustang’s successful launch of the new trike seat. “Plus it is a damn good seat!”

Traffic at both Mustang’s locations in the Black Hills was up considerably compared to last year. “It took 20 minutes just to get across the street to Mustang’s location on Lazelle Street and foot traffic at our big rig was up by at least 70%,” he adds. “The star of the show really was our three-wheeler seat at both locations.” According to South Dakota DOT traffic entering the city of Sturgis was up… substantially.

“Traffic for the 2015 Official Rally Dates was up 30.7% from 2014. 2014 Traffic entering Sturgis at the 8 locations was 390,693. Traffic entering for 2015 at the 8 locations was 510,749. That is just the city of Sturgis and doesn’t take into account folks at The Legendary Buffalo Chip, Deadwood, Spearfish and Rapid City (with a very large concentration of vendors working at Black Hills Harley-Davidson). In addition, the South Dakota DOT does traffic counts only for the official dates of the rally, from Monday to Sunday. The methodology used to count traffic is based on portable road tube counters recording one vehicle for every 2 axles that hit the road tube. Counters and road tubes are checked daily during the week to ensure everything is counting correctly. Data is collected every Monday and Thursday. Taking traffic counts began with the 50th Rally in 1990.

MMP15_Sturgis_Freewheeler_4While the traffic count was no surprise, the hit of the show for Mustang was… Our new replacement seats for the Freewheeler™ were stopping traffic at the Rally Rig at Black Hills Harley. “The comfort level is second to none while the clean look and feel of the expanded vinyl cover and detailed automotive-inspired stitching has to be experienced first-hand,” adds John. With Mustang’s marine-grade fiberglass pan and all-day-comfort foam supporting the rider in the ideal cruising posture, racking up the miles to Sturgis or wherever your road trips may take you are no problem.

“With a Mustang seat, you can ride your Freewheeler™ all day, every day,” claims Glynn. Features a front bucket drain hole, matching fully-adjustable driver backrest and built-in driver backrest receiver (note, this will not work with a frame-mounted backrest kit). In addition to the standard seating position, Mustang offers a “forward” version, the Forward Touring which moves the rider 2″ forward on the motorcycle for easier steering, something to take into account on a trike.

“Our seats are preferred by motorcycle riders who want comfort, quality and style from a company that firmly stands behind their products,” John says. “Whether it is two wheels or three, Mustang continues to earn its wings with every ride!”

Garage-Girls Ultimate Biker Makeover Winner

21 Aug

ubm-2015-mainWe have a winner! As announced during the 75th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, our friends at Garage-Girls and GEICO picked a winner of the 2015 Ultimate Biker Makeover. As we have been proud to do in the past, the family here at Mustang Seats was happy to lend a helping hand to this worthy cause again this year. In something of a surprise the Garage-Girls winner was a man… but no less deserving!

“Garage-Girls and GEICO Motorcycle are proud to announce this year’s Ultimate Biker Makeover winner; Matthew Palmer,” said organizer Sara Liberte. “Matthew was selected among more than 130 entries to this year’s contest. It was a tough decision, as it always is, but the votes went in favor of Matthew.” GEICO Motorcycle made the official announcement live on stage at the Buffalo Chip during this year’s 75th Sturgis Rally on August 6th.

The tale begins as Sergeant Matthew Palmer, a medic in the United States Army for the past 5 years, was headed off the base when he endured a horrific accident on his motorcycle. “Coming home from Camp H. M. Smith on a sunny Oahu day, I was forced to make a life or death decision….” Is how Matthew’s story begins.

mattTold he may never walk normally again, Matthew is already determined to ride again! “The bike and I were badly hurt,” he admits, but that just serves to fuel the fire in this serviceman. “Once I got to the hospital I was told I had a broken leg and arm and that both would require surgery to fix properly. I was also told that the cops never got the individual’s information before he left the scene, leaving myself and my insurance to foot the bill.”

The double whammy of both financial and physical impact would daunt a lesser man… or woman, but it is a motivator for Sgt. Palmer. “I don’t know if I will ever walk properly again or have full recovery in my hand, but I will ride again. That is why I think I should be given this prize package. Not because I want you to feel sorry for me; but because I want to show everyone who has been in an accident and not gotten back on the bike or for everyone who is too afraid of what could happen, that it is okay.”

Mustang joins Garage-Girls and GEICO Motorcycle and all the other companies who have stepped up to support the Ultimate Biker Makeover. We are proud to help Matthew along during his recovery.

Joining in the rewards package, Matthew takes home all the prizes, including a wardrobe of shoes from Harley-Davidson Footwear; a case of synthetic oil from our fellow New Englanders at Spectro Oils; new Mustang Seat and some swag; a set of AVON Tyres; a new Bell helmet, RSD jacket and gloves courtesy of J&P Cycles and Roland Sands Designs; clothing by Hijinx Apparel, Biker’s Choice and more!

Sgt. Palmer, we salute you!

LowDown Launches For High Flying 35th Anniversary!

22 Apr

_MG_0365-1What better way for Mustang to celebrate its high-flying 35th Anniversary than coming up with a low down seat? Actually our 35th birthday present to touring bike riders is the LowDown seat. Touring riders have been asking for it.. and we have been listening.

79912_AppMustang’s newest Solo seat for touring bikes. The LowDown™ Solo was specifically engineered for 2009-2015 Harley-Davidson® FL Touring models to give riders a lower seat height without compromising on comfort. The LowDown’s 13″ wide bucket is shaped and angled for optimal touring posture on the go, but the real benefit is when you come to a stop. The LowDown™ really does drop the rider down closer to the ground and it is also cut narrow at the front so you can plant your feet firmly on the ground at a stop.

76082_hdAvailable with or without studs, riders can opt for chrome studs… or really bring on the birthday bling with black pearl-centered chrome studs! The LowDown™ seats also come with slotted mounting nuts and Mustang’s mini bib for a complete custom look. Pair it with a Mustang passenger seat if you want company, or run it solo to go it alone.

79912_1_hdFor even more long-distance comfort, add Mustang’s fully adjustable, easily removable driver backrest. Bottom line for the LowDown: it puts your butt closer to the ground, without being a pain in the posterior… or your wallet! For more specifics, check out the website:

http://www.mustangseats.com/Categories.aspx?varSearch=LowDown

In addition to seats for FL series touring bikes, Mustang has replacement seats for virtually all late model Harley-Davidson® motorcycles. How would you like a free seat for your bike or trike? Mustang’s customer GIVEAWAYS program kicked-off during Bike Week in Daytona and the next winner will be announced at the Laughlin River Run. See the website for details on how to win the Mustang seat of your choice here: http://www.mustangseats.com/mustang/history-35thanniversary

Touring Trio Takes Flight During Daytona

MMP15_Blog_Trike2

SnowPlowFinally! It is time for Bike Week in Daytona and the official start of the 2015 riding season! In an effort to escape record snowfall in New England, Mustang is sending a full contingent to Florida! Actually we are sending the crew to Daytona to support the launch of our 35th Anniversary campaign, highlighted by a trio of touring seats. Amazing how many volunteers we had to “work” in Daytona, though.

Although we gave our dealers a sneak peek at the newest touring seats at the trade-only V-Twin Expo a couple of weeks ago, Daytona will be the first opportunity the general public will have to see Mustang’s Trike Seat. Actually, the new Deluxe Touring Seat fits FL Touring models from 2008-15 as well as the Tri Glide® Ultra Classic and Street Glide Trikes. Engineered specifically for all-day comfort, the 19” wide front seat sets the rider back 1.75” compared to the stock seat. It also angles the body positioning for improved long-distance comfort.

Of course long distance touring is more fun two-up, so R&D guys focused on the passenger seat to make sure it measures up to Mustang’s high-flying standards. The 14” wide rear seat provides support across its full width and keeps the passenger firmly in the comfort zone. In addition to feeling good, it looks good! We styled this seat along the lines of state-of-the-art automotive interior designs… think Jaguar or Bentley. These seats feature exquisite stitching detail like a luxury automobile, but unlike a car seat, our Deluxe Touring Seat includes front bucket drain for rainy days… not that it is going to rain on our parade in Daytona, knock on wood.

The receiver for the optional, removable driver backrest is built into the baseplate. Please note that this seat will not work with Mustang or Harley® frame-mounted backrest kits. In addition to the trikes and FLs, Mustang also offers replacement seats for virtually all late model Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

How would you like a free seat for a bike or trike? Be sure to check out the #5For35 campaign on Mustang’s Facebook page! Starting with Bike Week in Daytona, we will be awarding seats to contest winners at major Rallies throughout 2015… the only catch is you have to “Like” Mustang Seats!

MUSTANG FALLS IN LOVE WITH ITALY!

2015 Motor Bike Expo In Verona

GirlVeronaVerona is one of the most beautiful cities in Italy… and in literary circles it is also the setting for the star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet. In the motorcycle world, Verona is better known for the passionate fans who flock to the Motor Bike Expo. After sitting out the big trade show in Milan in 2014, Mustang is back in the International show saddle in 2015, starting the new year off in Italy.

Mustang was on hand to support our European fans by booking booth space at the 2015 Motor Bike Expo at the Veronafiere complex January 23-25. The highlight of the show for us was the world MustangVeronalaunch of a line-up of seats for the new Harley-Davidson® Street 750 & 500 models, but we really appreciated the time spent with the people at the show. More than 160,000 rabid motorcyclists surrounded 560+ exhibitors and filled the 67,000 sq. meter indoor area. There was also another 20,000+ meters of outdoor entertainment areas, so it would be an understatement to say this show was rocking!

JodySkunkMustang was located directly adjacent to our New England neighbors from Perewitz (what are the odds of traveling 3,000 miles and ending up in adjoining booths?)… although Dave couldn’t make it, Jody seemed to be having a great time, but we were not sure what she was doing with a live skunk in the booth one day! We were also located between two of Mustang’s leading European distributors, Parts Europe and Motorcycle Storehouse. Indian and Victory motorcycles, as well as the gang from the Buffalo Chip in Sturgis were also at the Motor Bike Expo, so we were definitely in good company.

The food, the people and the passion for motorcycles… what’s not to like? We’re thinking that Montagues and the Capulets would have been better off with riding motorcycles and hanging out at the Motor Bike Expo than feuding over petty matters.

Sons Of Anarchy Signs Off

SOA1

Marj from Mustang Seats road crew with Tommy Flanagan from Sons of Anarchy at the Las Vegas BikeFest.

Love it or hate it, there is no question Sons Of Anarchy influenced the American motorcycle market like nothing else since Orange County Chopper’s TV heyday. While Mustang never made a seat for the show, we have seen the influence of the anarchists… um, mythical SAMCRO bikers. Mustang’s road crew even hung out with some of the cast at the Las Vegas Bikefest this fall.

BurnoutAlthough some industry folks eventually “burned out” on the SOA phenomenon, the majority of fans watched all seven seasons. In fact, the last episode which recently aired received the greatest number of viewers in the show’s entire run. While we never adapted SOA-style uniform, we will admit one of our guilty pleasures was watching the show each week.

76869_app_hd-smThis bad boy mentality also resulted in Mustang introducing our leanest and meanest seat ever for Harley-Davidson® Dyna and FL models. For 35 years we have prided ourselves on offering seats that were based on our three pillars: clean. class. comfort. While the new RunAround™ is still proudly made in the USA, and doesn’t sacrifice Mustang’s legendary reputation for quality, it is definitely not a touring seat in terms of all-day comfort!

SOA2

Marj is ready to throw down with Mark Boone Junior from Sons of Anarchy at the Las Vegas BikeFest!

That didn’t seem to stop demand from Softail riders wanted this seat. After watching the last season of SOA, our R&D team went back to the drawing board and engineered the lowest solo seat possible for 2000-2015 Harley® standard rear tire Softails. (Actually fitments for FLSTS 2000-2003, FLSTN 2005-up, FLSTSC 2006-2007 and FLSTC 2007-up were plotted on the CAD-CAM machine,, not drawn on graph paper but you get the idea). For good measure, they added most of the other 2000-2006 Softails to the mix, including FLST 2006, FLSTC 2000-2006, FLSTF 2000-2006, FLSTSC 2005, FXST 2000-2005, FXSTB 2000-2005 and FXSTS 2000-2005.

Our combination of New England craftsmanship combined with 21st Century engineering means your RunAround™ seat gives your bike plenty of attitude without being too much of a pain in the ass. Our controlled density polyurethane foam can be poured a little thinner without compromising the comfort, but making for a much thinner seat pad in the process.

Made in-house at Mustang’s historic Three Rivers, MA facility, the exact angle and density of each seat foam panel is formulated and cast to be soft enough for comfort, but resilient enough to retain its shape and structural integrity for years. While Sons Of Anarchy has been relegated to the world of re-runs bikers looking for a bad ass seat need look no further than:

Mustang Helps Garage-Girls 2014 Ultimate Biker Makeover

2014UBMwinner_prizes_

Once again this year, Mustang was proud to join with Sara Liberte and the Garage-Girls Ultimate Biker Makeover program. Although we shared an update on the winner via social media, there is more to the story, much more.

Garage-Girls 2014 Ultimate Biker Makeover, Chris Gibbany of Harrison, Arkansas, was among 84 contestants who sent in a 600-word essay describing why they were most in need of a Garage-Girls Ultimate Biker Makeover. Her essay touched upon her sacrifices and commitment to “hunker down” and put herself through school in order to open new career opportunities.

“We received more submissions for the 2014 Garage-Girls Ultimate Biker Makeover Contest than for any other previous contest,” said Garage-Girls marketing coordinator, Sara Liberte. “It was definitely a challenge choosing a winner among so many great entries.” Of course Sara is quick to credit the sponsors, and we were honored to be included. “We want to thank GEICO as well as our other sponsors for their commitment to make this contest possible. Frankly, there would be no Garage-Girls Ultimate Biker Makeover Contest without their continued support.”

As the 2014 Ultimate Biker Makeover winner, Gibbany is enjoying a multitude of prizes, including new shoes from Harley-Davidson® Footwear, a brand new jacket and matching gloves from Roland Sands; a Speed & Strength helmet from J&P Cycles; a cleaning kit from Wizards Products; a case of synthetic oil from Spectro; clothing from Hijinx Apparel and a set of Avon tires. Last but not least, a set of saddlebags from Mustang… We offered a seat of her choice, but she really wanted the saddlebags.

“Mustang sent me the saddlebags I picked out, PLUS they sent me another box with T-shirts, hats, pens, stickers and a zippered tote bag,” Chris told Garage-Girls after getting her “care” package. “Mustang really went all out, especially since they swapped in bags instead of a seat.”

Chris also got the jacket and gloves from Roland Sands Design. “Beautiful brown, with pockets inside and places to put the Kevlar inserts which I would like to get. The gloves are black and fit perfectly. It’s just like Christmas around here.  And seeing how we don’t “do” Christmas, makes it just that more exciting. I told the UPS guy to “keep ’em coming”. I hope to ride tomorrow (raining today) and try out the new jacket. Husband really likes it and says it will be my “new look” to come out riding the Panhead!

Thanks so much Sara, Garage-Girls and all the sponsors ~ Chris

“Chris puts a lot of miles on her motorcycle and we wanted to make sure she has the latest and safest riding equipment,” said Liberte. To read more about Chris Gibbany’s story and for more information on the 2014 Ultimate Biker Makeover, please visit www.garage-girls.com.

Mustang Shows Summit In Germany

MMP14_FB SV Summit 2

Intermot Logo2The INTERMOT show in Cologne (or Köln as the locals say) is at the apex of the European motorcycle show scene, so it makes sense that Mustang is showing off our new Summit seat in Germany this week. Designed exclusively for the 2014 Harley-Davidson® Rushmore, this seat is the pinnacle of everything we have learned about seat making since 1980. Thanks to our partners at MAG Europe and Parts Europe, Mustang will be well represented at INTERMOT.

IMG_7650aCelebrating the return of the Road Glide to Harley’s lineup, the Rushmore project represents “summit” of what a touring bike should be. Pretty high expectations to live up to, but Mustang’s R&D rose to the challenge! Just as Project Rushmore represents more than another FL for The Motor Company, the Summit is more than just another seat for an FL series Harley. The Road Glide has a special place in the pantheon of touring motorcycles… and we think our Summit is pretty special as well.

76864_hdsmWe believe both you and your passenger will experience the peak of comfort with the Summit Super Touring seat. The one-piece “super” comfortable touring design provides the rider and passenger with the optimum riding position. The 19″ wide Super front bucket sits you 1.75″ further back than the stock seat. The passenger seat is a full 16″ wide and fits perfectly with the OE Rushmore speakers and Tour-Pak. Adding to the comfort level is the optional heating element for the Summit.

The Summit is just the tip of the Matterhorn (oh wait, that is in Switzterland)… the Summit is just one of the high points for Mustang’s offerings at INTERMOT. We will also be showing our new Adventure Touring seat for the BMW R1200 GS and several other items that have not been made available in Europe before now. Cheers! Wait, we meant to say Prost!

Perewitz Signature Series Seats Sign In At Sturgis!

Limited Edition Posters Of The Legend Himself

MMP14_FB-Sturgis-Perewitz--v2

To help launch the Perewitz Signature Series seats in Sturgis, bike building legend Dave Perewitz will be signing limited edition posters exclusively at the Mustang displays during the rally. Designed by Dave, made by Mustang, the name really does mean something! Everything we know went into making these seats before the Perewitz name was put on it!

So who is the man behind the mythological “Perewitz” name? Dave Perewitz built his first bike back in 1973 and his Cycle Fab shop quickly gained a reputation. Since then, his artistry and skills have earned the Perewitz name a global recognition, particularly for Harley baggers (or “Baggas” as Dave says with his distinctive Massachusetts accent).

Dave and the team at Mustang worked closely together to create the Signature Series, comprised of one solo seat and four new Fastback styles. In addition to the Solo seat introduced in our 2014 catalog (see pages 36-37), we now have Perewitz Signature seats for most Harley-Davidson® FL models from 1997 and up, in addition to 2006-10 FXST models.

MMP_Perewitz-n-bikeSee the full range of Perewitz Signature Seats in Sturgis, as well as our replacement seats for the all-new Indian motorcycles and the instruction of our retro metal flake inserts. From 12-2 p.m. on August 4th, Dave will be signing these posters at the Mustang big rig located at Black Hills Harley-Davidson. On August 5, he heads over to the Mustang display at J&P Cycles on Lazelle Street, again from 12-2p.m.

If you can’t make it to Black Hills in time to have Perewitz personally sign your seat and grab a poster, you can still download your digital Perewitz wallpaper poster version and also check out the line of Signature Series Seats at:
